How does StartWP AI Agent work?
Add an AI provider (base URL + API key), set what the AI may do in Permissions, then chat: the agent plans your task and runs real WordPress tools — creating posts, building pages, managing plugins and settings — showing its steps live, with dry-run previews for risky actions and a full activity log you can revert.
Which AI models are supported?
Any OpenAI-compatible API — OpenAI (ChatGPT), DeepSeek, Grok, Gemini-compatible bridges, OpenRouter, SenseNova, local models — plus native Anthropic Claude. Enter your provider’s base URL, API key, and model IDs; the plugin auto-detects how that provider handles tools.
Can I use local or self-hosted AI models?
Yes. Any OpenAI-compatible endpoint works — Ollama, LM Studio, and other self-hosted gateways included. Paste the base URL and key, and the agent runs entirely against your local models. And yes, the plugin is free for commercial client projects too.
Can I switch providers in StartWP AI Agent?
Absolutely! You can add multiple providers and switch between them instantly from the chat interface without losing chat history.

The StartWP AI plugin can simply do any job inside of WordPress dashboard:

What are Ask, Do, and Custom modes?
Ask Mode: Read-only access. AI can view and list site data but cannot make changes.
Do Mode: Full access. AI can perform all enabled tools and modify your site.
Custom Mode: You pick exactly which tools the AI can use. Permissions is the brain — the chat window follows the matching profile.
Can the AI edit my pages with page builders?
Yes. Gutenberg and block themes get deep editing — insert and update blocks, FSE templates and styles. For Elementor and other builders, the AI makes surgical content edits today — and builders that register WordPress Abilities (Elementor already does, 27 abilities) are driven fully natively through the Abilities Hub.
Can the AI upload and use images?
Yes — the AI can search stock photos (Pexels), generate images (if your provider supports it), import remote images into your media library, and manage alt text in bulk. Attaching images inside the chat is planned for a future update.
Is my data safe?
Your data stays yours. API keys and chat history live only in your own WordPress database — we have no servers, no telemetry, no phoning home. The only external communication is direct between your site and the AI provider you configured. MCP tokens are stored as hashes, shown once.
What about WordPress security best practices?
The plugin follows all WordPress coding standards:
- Nonce verification on all AJAX requests
- Capability checks for all operations
- SQL injection prevention via prepared statements
- Input sanitization and output escaping
- SSRF protection for external requests
Can the AI edit PHP or theme files?
No — by design. Executable code edits (PHP/JS and similar) are blocked for security, and because one wrong line can take a site down. The same protection covers this plugin and premium plugins. Everything else — content, media, menus, settings, styles — is fair game.
Will it burn a lot of API tokens?
No — the plugin is engineered to spend less. Do mode carries only the tools the task needs (smart tool selection), older chat turns are auto-compacted, oversized tool results are capped, and Ask mode is a read-only budget lane. Each ability pack shows its token estimate before you enable it.
Which WordPress and PHP versions are supported?
WordPress 6.2+ and PHP 7.4+, on any host — including shared hosting. Tested up to WordPress 7.1
Can I use it on client sites?
Yes — free on unlimited sites, including commercial client projects. You keep 100% of what you charge.
